The Village Square: January 21, 2019

Before we get to the board game news, I’d like to recall these words from Dr. Martin Luther King: “The time is always right to do what is right.” Best wishes to everybody on this day to reflect and to serve your communities.

Reimagining Yspahan

Corinth is the roll-and-write version of Yspahan from 2006. According to the Days of Wonder website, “In each round of Corinth, a handful of dice are rolled and players take turns selecting groups of dice to deliver goods to shops, purchase herds of goats or visit the market, recording their progress on their notepads.”

Terraforming Mars: Legacy
Dice Tower News reports that Terraforming Mars will be getting a legacy title. “Stephen [Buonocore of Stronghold Games] confirmed that [designers]Jacob and Issac Fryxelius are 100% working on the Legacy version of Terraforming Mars. Now, Stephen cautions that the project is still very early in the works and it might not be seen until 2020 or 2021.”

Conspiracy Comes to Restoration Games
Restoration Games is bringing back another game from childhoods past. From their website: “Conspiracy: The Solomon Gambit is our restoration of the classic 1973 spy game, designed by Dr. Eric Solomon. It features the shared pieces and blind bidding that make the game unique. We added in agent effects and a new endgame trigger to make it even more dynamic.”

New Titles From Rio Grande Games
Over on BGG W. Eric Martin previewed upcoming titles from the seemingly revitalized Rio Grande Games: Underwater Cities, Gambit Royale, Concordia Venus, Roll for the Galaxy: Rivalry, Caravan, Nevada City, and Power Grid Recharged. “Rio Grande is continuing the partnerships that remained, adding new licensing partners to the line-up, and releasing a wider range of original titles.”

Bushido
According to ACD Distribution, Bushido from Grey Fox Games will hit retail shelves sometime in February. “Bushido is a two-player head-to-head board game using a combination of cards and dice. Players will train hard, drafting the techniques they need to win the day. Then they’ll pick a weapon to bring to the fight before entering the dojo for a duel to the death.”

Super Punch Fighter
Coming soon from Plaid Hat Games is Super Punch Fighter, an arena combat game inspired by video games. One to six players will “a [c]hoose a fighter, grab their deck, and start knocking your opponents off the stage. Each knock out will earn you a star, and don’t forget to try for each of the achievement cards as well, for extra stars.”

Record Amount for Kickstarter Board Games
According to ICv2.com, last year was another record-breaking year for board games on Kickstarter. “Successful tabletop game projects raised $165.3 million on Kickstarter in 2018, up 20% from the $137 raised in 2017.”

Stonemaier on Supply and Demand
Jamey Stegmaier talked about the difficult task of forecasting demand for board games. “ Publishers don’t know the demand for a new game until they announce it, reviewers discuss it, and people play it. And most importantly, demand is uncertain until people can actually buy it. Until then, the demand is purely hypothetical.”
