TONS of board games are in the news this week thanks to the GAMA trade show in Las Vegas. This is just a small sampling…of which CMON, Inc., made some of the bigger splashes.

Cool Mini or Not to just start printing money directly
It’d be more efficient for them, although then we couldn’t throw it at them with their latest announced project – A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game.  In conjunction with miniatures specialists Dark Sword Miniatures, the company will begin its Kickstarter later in 2017.  Pick your family because Winter is coming…and so is your wallet.

Wave XI
The latest expansion ships for Star Wars X-Wing: Miniatures Game is Independent Operations.  It showcases three new ships that are lesser known, but offer powerful new options.

Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers eat your hearts out
This Fall IDW Games releases the 1930’s retro sci-fi pulp action game Rayguns and Rocketships.  Lead one of four factions, gather a crew, and duke it out with others in massive starship broadsides and spacewalking firefights!

An upgrade for the mad king
Mad King Ludwig gets a new flat in Bezier Games’ The Palace of Mad King Ludwig. With some similarities to Castles in that players build the palace together but compete for the most influence, there are some new mechanisms, too.  The game will release in October.

Renegade Game Studios announces a new cooperative dexterity game to release in Summer 2017.  Flip Ships from Kane Klenko tasks players with surviving a stellar ambush with their finger powered starships!

Play ball
As baseball gears up for a new season, so does Steamforged Games’ new Guild Ball offerings!  Realeasing April 21 are the Season 3 Rulebook, Hunters: Heralds of Winter’s Moon expansion and an organized play kit of prizes and other goodies.

Hail to the Chief
David Hoppe will step in as President of GenCon this May, replacing Adrian Swartout.  The two will work closely together still to prepare for Gen Con 50.  Hoppe has plenty of industry experience, both board games and video.  He recently worked at Tenacious Games, Upper Deck and Wizards of the Coast.  He steps into his new leadership role from Blastworks, Inc., after positions with Xbox, Microsoft and Flashlight Creations.

And Hail to the King…
…of Kickstarter (currently)! After several massively successful campaigns for the company (and, of course, with previous designs, too), Eric Lang is officially with Cool Mini or Not as Director of Game Design.  In his role he will continue to design games as well as lead development of new titles.

I have lots of kids. Board games help me connect with them, while still retaining my sanity...relatively speaking.

    Jason,

Great info as always! Just one add…you didn’t mention NOVACOn, Northern Virginia’s 1st Board and Card Game Convention this July!

    Cheers
    Joe

  2. Hi, I’m wondering if you’ve got any suggestions for a board game that’s easy to learn without the losing the fun too fast, because I’ve tried playing board games like these before, and I’m itching to try one. Oh, and do you create those panoramas I see in game shops yourselves?

    • Jason Meyers

At the moment, no. Think our list would be too long and too hard to keep updated and we’d inevitably short-shrift some county. Maybe we should add a link to one if we can find one, though.
