The Village Square: July 20, 2017

Spiel des Jhares winner announced!
If you haven’t seen it already, it’s official! Kingdomino, from Bruno Cathala and published by Blue Orange Games, has grabbed the coveted and lucrative award as Game of the Year. Grabbing the Kennerspiel des Jahres (roughly speaking connoisseur’s game of the year) is EXIT: The Game (our review), by Inka and Markus Brand and published by KOSMOS. Last month Ice Cool (our review), by Brian Gomez and Brain Games, took the children’s category Kinderspiel des Jahres.

IDW and Nickelodeon team up
Heavy IP publisher IDW Games is partnering with Nickelodeon to create a line of designs from their 1990s properties, including Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Wild Thornberrys and more! The first title, Nickelodeon Splat Attack, will include scores of popular Nick characters from that decade in an all-out food fight brawl! Release the nostalgia! The game is slated for Spring 2018.

How does your forest grow?
Blue Orange Games will release the extremely intriguing Photosynthesis at GenCon 50. The 3D design of forests and trees tasks players with strategically planting and cultivating trees. Don’t get “shade” thrown on you, because the way to earn points is getting your trees’ leaves to collect energy from the sun!

How does your kingdom grow?
Z-Man games has announced a new card game of medieval kingdom building to release at Essen Spiel.  Here is a preview of Majesty: For the Realm, the tableau building design of production and intrigue.

Riding the rainbows
Ninja Division will release Rainbow Knights in September. The family and kids game tasks players with riding through the skies to complete their colorful trails before the other heroes and steeds.

Hidden Truths
dV GIOCHI is publishing a new cooperative deduction game. In 3 Secrets one player is an informant with all of the information and tries to help the others deduce the case. But everyone is racing against the clock!

Got Smash Up?
Apparently AEG’s fan submitted factions expansion was enough of a success that the publisher is asking us to hit them, baby, one more time. Have a great idea for a faction to the smash hit Peterson design? Or was your last submission rejected and you want to try again?

A Designer Shoutout
Speaking of the Spiel des Jahres, one Bruno – Faidutti, from his blog – gives a shoutout to another – Cathala, recipient of the coveted SdJ for Kingdomino. Both are great friends, co-designers and ardent believers in teamwork design. This is a fun “tribute.”

I have lots of kids. Board games help me connect with them, while still retaining my sanity...relatively speaking.
