The Village Square: June 10, 2019

What have you been playing lately? Don’t forget to join our BGG Guild’s monthly conversation about recent gaming highlights.

Godzilla Card Game
According to the Godzilla Card Game from Bandai stomps into retail stores this September. “The Godzilla Card Game will feature many of the most popular giant monsters from the classic movies, including Godzilla himself, of course, as well as Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Jet-Jaguar, and more … The game is built on the new Chrono Clash game system, created by Ryan Miller (whose credits include work on Magic: The Gathering design teams).”

Tariffs Affecting Board Games
Game developer Mike Selinker talks about the effects of recent tariffs on the board game industry. “I’ve heard arguments that tariffs will cure what many people think is a glut in the number of board games produced each year. It seems unlikely to me that creators will become less creative because of government pressure. Either way, I would not attempt to cure overpopulation with a hydrogen bomb, and so I wouldn’t try to cure domestic oversupply with an instrument as destructive as tariffs.”

Welcome to the Party, Pal
The Op (USAopoly) announced its game based on the Christmas movie Die Hard will be available in July (yes, it’s the greatest Christmas movie ever). Die Hard: The Nakatomi Heist Board Game will be a one-versus-all game, with one player taking on the iconic role of supercop John McClane. Yipee-ki-yay.

Memoir ’44: New Flight Plan
Days of Wonder released Memoir ’44: New Flight Plan, the latest expansion for Memoir ’44. “[P]layers will be able to deploy air units, such as fighters, fighter-bombers and even bombers to support their troops on the battlefield. This is not the first time airplanes will make an appearance in the Memoir ’44 system, but with its all new set of streamlined rules, Memoir ’44 – New Flight Plan grants many new tactical options and is compatible with all existing scenarios in all theaters of operation.”

Lorenzo the Card Game
On Twitter Cranio Creations announced it will debut Masters of Renaissance, the card game version of Lorenzo il Magnifico, at Origins.

Gamegenic Ingenious Supplies
Asmodee recently launched a new division focusing on creating board game accessories. According to Dice Tower News, “the first project for Gamegenic will be accessories for the immensely popular collectible deck game Keyforge: Call of the Archons. … they will be bringing official deck boxes, sleeves, and other accessories.”

Dice Settlers: Western Sea
Also from Dice Tower News is the announcement of the Dice Settlers expansion, Western Sea, which “allows the players to expand beyond the lands initially available to them, all the way to the sea. Besides the growing possibilities of the base game, the expansion introduces ways for the players to fish, sail, find treasure, and discover new and interesting technologies.” It will be released Spiel later this year.

Atelier: The Painter’s Studio
AEG’s Atelier: The Painter’s Studio hits stores July 19th, according to its latest email. “Take on the role of an artist managing an atelier, or art studio, in the 19th century.  Roll dice, manage your assistants, collected needed paint, and complete famous works of art.”

From W. Eric Martin’s BGG blog comes news of Aftermath, the “third title in Jerry Hawthorne’s Adventure Book Game series: Aftermath. Aftermath follows the formula of Stuffed Fables and Comanauts in that the game includes a book of scenarios that collectively form a large campaign, with 1-4 players working together to survive.”
