The Village Square: June 29, 2017

GenCon50 might sell out?
In an unprecedented development, GenCon announced as of Monday, June 23, that the Western Hemisphere’s largest gaming convention – and its 50th anniversary – might sell out.  The fair has already expanded into a football stadium!  Apparently even that might not be enough space!

Defend the planet
What happens when you throw away your old robots? Well, when millions do it becomes a litter catastrophe threatening all of Earth! Now in Planet Defenders from Renegade Game Studios you can save the galaxy in the ultimate Adopt-A-Highway project in history!

Speaking of robots…
…perhaps a good source of that automaton trash comes from destroyed robots battling it out for our entertainment! Dicebot Megafun from WizKids puts you in charge of quickly assembling robots from dice and buying weapons to duke it out in a free-for-all brawl.

Season 2
Z-Man has renewed the popular TV show Pandemic Legacy for another season.  Available this Fall, the standalone title has plenty of new story twists and players. But the plot’s the same – race against time with a team of survivors to eradicate the plague!

The Grizzled
Cool Mini or Not has officially acquired the rights to Sweet Games’ critically acclaimed The Grizzled and expansions. Previously obtaining the rights to its English edition, CMON will now have full control of the title, including the next expansion in development, Armistice Edition, which adds a campaign element to the challenging cooperative card game.

The rush is on!
Red Raven Game’s Klondike Rush releases next month.  The bidding and stock game tasks players as the head of mining companies with tapping gold mines along certain routes to strike it rich. Oh, and keep an eye out for the abominable snowman!

When kittens become cats
Sentai Cats from Iello will release early 4th quarter.  Can you train your kitty to join the elite Feline Force to overcome Meka Dog?  The quirky little simultaneous action selection design plays 3 to 6 and is part of Iello’s mini card game line.

Games at the corner drug store
School is in!  And you can find it at Walgreens!  Munchkin Spell Skool is coming to a Walgreens near you.  You read that right!  The light card game takes on the student-wizards-in-school trope and, in another development for the hobby, has already been featured in Forbes magazine (for games appearing in new places).

Acquisition disorder
Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games talks buy-outs.  His personal experience exploring that route and a guide to other companies when approached by a larger publisher.

Central Intelligence
See, board gaming is so important it eventually impacts the POTUS! Fascinating article and interview with COIN series designer and CIA instructor Volko Ruhnke about designing games to train intelligence officers.

I have lots of kids. Board games help me connect with them, while still retaining my sanity...relatively speaking.
