The Village Square: May 4, 2017

Origins Preview
The always excellent, thorough and informative Origins preview is now up on Board Game Geek. And while moderator Eric Martin is off to even more of a running start this year, monitor it for more updates throughout the next month. While you’re waiting to register for events, plan your voyage through the exhibit hall with this listing!

At another crossroads
Plaid Hat Games will soon release Warring Colonies, a new expansion to Dead of Winter that ratchets up the content and interaction.  Now team up and fight each other with new objective sets, but watch out for the lone wolf.

The Pirates of the Cardboard
Alderac will release Oath of the Brotherhood in June. The worker placement pirate game is all about gathering resources and completing missions. You know, like pirates do.

Winter is Now
The expansion to Quick, Simple, Fun Games’ Rush & Bash is now available. The icy modules add all kinds of cold-hearted obstacles and weapons to the wild, crazy racing game.

Valerian Board Game
Hot on the heels of high-drama sci-fi flick Valerian and the City of a Thousands Planets, UltraPro will release a board game based on the property in July.  Valerian: The Alpha Missions is a semi-cooperative design tasking players with exploring the reaches of Alpha while battling or evading enemies to reach the extraction point in time.

Not your worst nightmare
In a completely different IP, Everything Epic has announced development on a miniatures game based on the iconic Rambo movies. It will include the franchise’s iconic and popular characters, all with different abilities and functions.  After tackling Big Trouble in Little China, this seems like a logical next step for the company.  Secretly hoping it gets done!

Welcome to the dungeon
Indie Boards and Cards will release the tile-laying, dice-driven combat dungeon crawl game, Delve, in June.

Passport Game Studios Rules
Actually, that’s …Rule & Make. The publisher and distributor has signed a deal with Australian games maker Rule & Make to distribute titles from Down Under – not just to U.S. markets, but worldwide.

Chilly Dystopia
If you you like your end-of-world role-playing games, Sandy Pug’s new release Ice offers a little different setting.  In this dark fantasy Ice Age of the future, humans must battle it out with saber tooth tigers, Neanderthals and mammoths in a frozen wasteland.  Requires the FATE core rulebook.

Keep calm and play on
Ever heard of the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY? The Daily Worker Placement got a behind-the-scenes tour of this one-of-a-kind institution devoted to fostering cultural creativity, learning and discovery through – among other things – the history of children, play, toys and games.

I have lots of kids. Board games help me connect with them, while still retaining my sanity...relatively speaking.
