Speaking of Essen
The voting is in and the 2017 Deutscher Spiele Preis goes to Terraforming Mars.  The annual award now usually recognizes deeper, more complex games than the family friendly Spiel des Jahres.  Former recipients include Mombasa (last year), Agricola, Caylus and El Grande.

Against the world
Renegade Game Studios’ anticipated Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Card Game will hit store shelves October 4. The deck-building game lets you take on the roles of your favorite characters from Brian Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels where you’ll “grow up and prepare for your finest hour.”  Each character has a unique starting deck and the design includes double-sided cards for greater depth.

Gaming archaeology
A new analysis of some bones from a famous Viking warrior’s burial confirm the remains are female, possibly lending credence to the iconic shield maiden legend.  We in the hobby might also be quite interested to note she was entombed with an intact board game!
