The Village Square: November 21, 2016

My local International Games Day at Your Library was not as good as last year, when my wife and I played King of Tokyo, Wits and Wagers, and Timeline with the staff and a few locals. Thankfully, I had some games with me, which ensured we didn’t get stuck playing Connect Four. Here’s to hoping that next year’s event is bigger and better.

Phase Friday
This year’s AEG Black Box features Phase, a new card game for advanced card gamers. It promises that “The strategies and tactics will challenge even veterans.” A few weeks ago I got to play Phase with one of AEG’s Vanguards; the game was certainly challenging and hardcore gamers should find plenty to like about Phase.

Three Kingdoms Redux
Capstone Games and Starting Player have partnered to produce the second edition of Three Kingdoms Redux, coming April/May 2017. The game “seeks to recreate the tripartite between the states of Wei, Wu and Shu. … Players start the game from asymmetrical positions, reflecting the manpower advantages Wei enjoyed in the early part of the period. The weaker states of Wu and Shu protect themselves by forming an alliance. The make-up of the alliance may change as the game progresses, depending on the game situation after each round.”

The Captain Is Dead
AEG previewed The Captain is Dead, its upcoming release that “features co-operative gameplay as players race against time to repair malfunctioning ship systems, deal with hostile aliens, and warp the ship out of danger.”

Digital Qwixx
Up on boardgamegeektv’s youtube channel is a first look at the Qwixx app for iOS.

Undercover Ops
Fantasy Flight Games announced pre-orders for the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) Headquarters Skirmish Map for Imperial Assault. The map measures 26” by 26” and “features all of the rooms and hallways of the skirmish mission printed directly onto the mat so setup never takes more than seconds.”

ACD Distribution has set a December 15th street date for Hanamikoji, a two-player game where opponents are “restaurateurs vying for the favor of seven graceful and adored geisha. Compete to earn the favors of more geisha masters to increase your business, by collecting essential items and giving away those less important.”

Star Wars Clue
The Star Wars edition of Clue is now available from Hasbro. “Be the first player to find out which planet Darth Vader plans to destroy next, which room the Death Star plans are hidden in, and which vehicle is the correct escape vehicle.”

Marvelous Munchkin
Marvel’s X-Men have joined the Munchkin universe, according to Dice Tower News, and will be available in March. Players will be able to play as “Professor X, Wolverine, and more super-charged mutants to take down the likes of Sabretooth, Juggernaut, and the almighty Magneto.”
