The Village Square: June 22, 2017

GenCon Preview
Well, with Origins wrapping up, you know what that means? 24 hours later it’s time for the GenCon Preview. Check in often for updates to the hobby’s most anticipated show – at least on this side of the Pond!

Magic’s Silver Anniversary
Magic: The Gathering turns 25 this year! To recognize the milestone, the game will release brand new sets as well as reintroducing popular elements from its history – including silver bordered cards! Official events will kick off at Hasbro’s exclusive Hascon in September.

Explosive expansion
The Fifth Ingredient expansion to Potion Explosion will release tomorrow from Cool Mini or Not. The new add on includes a new ingredient, more potions, a new mechanic in the Ghastly Cauldron and reward and scolding tokens. Class is about to start!

Enemies at the gate!
Later this summer Z-Man Games releases Bastion. You and a team of heroes must protect the citadel from hordes of enemies and monsters at all cost! The unique scenario-based design throws new perilous combinations at you every session so that no fight is the same! Plus, dragons!

Fantasy Steam
Mayfair Games’ Iron Dragon hits the streets, er, the tracks, again June 30.  The crayon rails design tasks dwarves, elves, humans and trolls with re-building the land of Darwinina by establishing a steam kingdom.  Plus, iron dragons!

I’m a lumberjack
Like to press wild flowers?  Capstone Games will release Lignum next month, a game all about the logging business.  Manage your resources, workers and contracts against fierce competition – while planning to survive the winter!

Can you survive Yeti Mountain?
If you thought mountain climbing was perilous enough, you might want to stay away from Dicey Peaks!  Calliope Games will release the game this August.  Choose your dice well, manage your oxygen and beware the Yeti. They may not be dragons, but they can still be mean.

Big dog gets its crate
Toys and games giant Hasbro is entering the subscription service.  For $49.99/month, you can now subscribe to the Game Crate. Specifying whether you’d like a family crate or party crate (some more for adults), the massive publisher will ship you three games.  One is featured, while the other two are mystery titles and all three are exclusive to the package.

Conventions and indie publishers
Tinkerbot Games has a nice article on attending conventions from a small or indie publisher’s perspective. The informative guide breaks down what to expect, what to bring, how to interact with the crowds as wells as their experiences at a recent convention.

I have lots of kids. Board games help me connect with them, while still retaining my sanity...relatively speaking.
