The Village Square: June 1, 2015

Origins is coming! It’s going to be an exciting week as we send one of our very own to take it all in. He even did a preview to rub it in.

Catch all the excitement by following me (@spielemitkinder) and Kenith (@iSlayTheDragon) on Twitter.

Hopefully Kenith won’t burn the whole place down.

Don’t worry, I’ll keep him in line.

I’ve promised to only eat one person per day!

Community Talk

I tend to prefer written content from the community but lately I’ve been branching out. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite people who are hard at work making great videos and podcasts.

First up is the podcast that got me interested in podcasts. Donny (@geauxdonny), Shawn (@droctashawn), and Travis (@travisdhill) are three guys that like to talk about playing games with less than three people. Sometimes they discuss games that aren’t Fields of Arle.

Low Player Count is a bi-weekly podcast devoted to thinking about, sometimes reviewing, but mostly discussing solo and two player boardgames and their place in the current board gaming culture. Instead of just doing reviews, we aim to dissect the larger boardgames industry through our discussions of one and two-player games, occasionally focusing on a specific game. We are three guys with a wide range of gaming interests and tastes, but all have an affinity for solo and two-player boardgames.

Next up is a group that’s just plain fun to listen to. Matt (@SinUhMuhnBuhns), Tiff (@IneptGamer), and Dan (@Scandalous_naD) discuss a whole bunch of nonsense!

All the latest nonsensical ramblings of The League of Nonsensical Gamers, a group of gamers who have agreed to dedicate themselves to producing high quality media content about the world of board games. Our group consists of a spectrum of gamer personalities, from the casual player to the hardcore strategist and even the lifetime collector. It’s our hope that with this diversity in perspectives, opinions, and preferences, you – the reader – will always be able to find a a viewpoint that is relatable. It’s our goal to keep all of the League content fresh, critical, interesting and entertaining.

The Nerd Nighters are JR Honeycutt (@JayAhre) and Andrew Enriquez (@cedeliing). They are occasionally joined by other nerdy folks to discuss their love of board games.

A weekly YouTube show about tabletop games, events, and interviews from around the world of gaming!

I try to promote Canadians any chance I get and The Meeple Syrup Show is hosted but some of the most talented Canadians around. Sen-Foong (@SenFoongLim), Daryl (@darylmandrews), and Dylan (@dnjkirk) welcome fellow designers and artists to the great white north.

The Meeple Syrup Show 3D (Designers discussing design)
Every Wed @11pm(EST) a LIVE video conversation about board games, from the designer perspective

Jon is one of the most relentlessly positive guys that I have ever seen. Interestingly enough he also provides the most balanced video reviews around clearly discussing the positive and negative points in an incredibly well structured format. Easily my favorite video reviewer!

My name is Jon and I love boardgames. I’ve decided to try my hand at making video reviews for some of the games i’ve played, attempting to give a critical look at the positives and negative of each game.

I’m also a member of a BGG Guild called “Tube Tables” that collects other uTubers that focus on Board, Card and Miniature gaming. Join the guild and get involved with the chat and make sure you check out the other channels in the guild! You can see links to there chan on my Channel Page under the heading “Other Tube Tables”

I could listen to Joel Eddy of Drive Thru Reviews talk all day long. If he haven’t already heard of him go watch one of his many, many videos.

Board game and card game reviews and tutorials, Gen Con Coverage, and podcasts.

Hope you get to listen to, watch, and support these (and more) great content! And make sure to watch our Twitter for Jason’s coverage from Origins.

Games On Our Table

I sadly didn’t play anything this week and expect June to be pretty light on games. Hopefully I’ll have something interesting to talk about next week!

I love optimization and engine games with tableau builders and card driven ones being my favorite. This usually means medium-heavy euros and medium-light card games.
